2010 Winter Mindfulness Retreat

The Bluewater Community of Mindful Living is happy to announce our annual Winter Mindfulness Retreat at Song of the Morning Yoga Retreat Center in Vanderbilt, Michigan.

This winter we will offer an optional multi-day extension of our regular weekend retreat. Enjoy up to five days of mindfulness practice in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh–sitting and walking meditation, some silent meals, dharma discussions, recitation of the Five and the Fourteen Mindfulness Trainings, networking with statewide meditation groups and other activities.

It is expected that most people will come just for the weekend with our usual schedule starting at 5 PM Friday through our concluding SundayDinner at 1 PM. We will also offer meditation and activities Wednesday afternoon, and all day Thursday and Friday. Come when you can and stay as long as you like.

The cost for the retreat is forty-five dollars a night plus tax for a bed in the "Dormitory Domes" including meals. If you stay more than three nights you will receive a 15% discount. Some private rooms are available for an additional cost through the Song of the Morning office.

Come enjoy the deep quiet of the north country in wintertime. Song of the Morning offers eight hundred acres of forest land astride the pristine Pigeon River and is ideal for meditation. It is about a four hour drive from Detroit or Grand Rapids. The accommodations are clean and comfortable with heated rooms and extra blankets. Meals will be vegetarian.

Tue, Feb 16th Romero – with Raul Julia Oscar Romero, A bishop in El Salvador calls for an end to violence against the poor, and those working for human rights in his country.To the men of the army he preached on a Sunday, “Brothers, you are from the same people, you kill your fellow peasant… No soldier is obliged to obey an order that is contrary to the will of God… In the name of God then, in the name of this suffering people I ask you, I command you in the name of God: stop the repression.”The next day, March 24, 1980, while celebrating mass he was gunned down by a member of a army general’s death squad. This is his story.
Tue, Feb 23rd Taxi to the Darkside Academy award winning docu-drama follows the story of a rural taxi driver in Afghanistan, who is swept up and detained in the early days of the U.S. invasion there. Testimony from our soldiers describes how pressure from above, and bad situations in the war zone, leads to the death of an innocent man, and abuses are multiplied on into Iraq, at Abu Grabe, and Guantanamo, Cuba detention-without-charge facilities.
Tue, Mar 2nd Rethink Afghanistan Filmmaker Robert Greenwald delivers a documentary that shatters most perceived truths behind the war in Afghanistan. Through conversations with soldiers, politicians, and Afghanis, the argument is made that a new approach must be made that respects the people, and decreases the violence.

Outlines the efforts of many different U.S. citizens whose consciences lead them to refuse some, or all, of the federal taxes they feel are supporting a persistent unjust war industry.

Tue, Mar 9th The Reluctant Prophet The story of a Fenton, MI priest who was the chaplain for the Enola Gay flight crew, that dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima. With time and study, prayer and reflection, he came to regret that action, and led the rest of his life traveling and preaching for reconciliation and nonviolence.
Vanunu A short BBC documentary on the development of the nuclear bomb in Israel in the 80’s, and the Israeli man who disclosed the truth, and then was put in solitary confinement for more than a decade. Even now released, he continues under virtual house arrest to this day.
Tue, Mar 16th I.O.U.S.A. The national debt is dissected and explained, in hopes that people can find a way to pressure the government and controlling financial interests to begin to live within their means.
Conviction Tells the story of three Dominican Sisters who took the proliferation of nuclear arms in this country personally. They felt called to protest at the missile silos of war—going to jail for peace.
Tue, Mar 23rd The Narrow Path An overview of the life, and peacemaker commitment, of Fr. John Dear, S.J. . He was a chaplain counseling the families of those killed in the 911 trade towers attack, and has been jailed over 75 times, for his witness to our need to put away the sword, demonstrating for nuclear disarmament and nonviolent justice.
