Tentative schedule:

March 15th – CASINO JACK – Feature film starring Kevin Spacey that follows the career of super lobbyist Jack Abramoff, recently released from prison convicted of high level influence peddling. Many of the schemes involved tribal casino money he’d scammed in the game of “who gets a casino”? [In Michigan his maneuvers helped prevent a casino in Port Huron.] Jack “partnered in crime” with former Speaker of the House Tom Delay [also served time] in his redistricting takeover of the Texas legislature. [108 minutes]
For background–all on Abramoff and how the “free speech” of money has hurt us in the past:

Another DVD documentary by Alex Gibney at St. Clair Co. library–Casino Jack and the United States of Money.
Finally, a new book by a repentant Jack Abramoff after time spent in prison– Capitol punishment : the hard truth about Washington corruption from America’s most notorious lobbyist / Jack Abramoff. Available at St. Clair Co. library.

March 22nd – TRINITY AND BEYOND: THE ATOMIC BOMB MOVIE – Produced by a filmmaker who also directed Star Wars, Star Trek II, and Robocop, and narrated by William Shatner, this movie evolves & explodes like a docudrama. Using actual footage of bomb tests, and the historical record it tells the tale of yet-to-reach-conclusion quest for the weapon-power of world domination. Paradoxically, with musical score from the Moscow Symphony Orchestra [most atomic tests featured are by the USA], this film is almost a celebration of the destructive technology, but with the underlying message that life on the planet hangs in the balance. [92 minutes]

March 29th – WAR MADE EASY – Documentary that describes how presidential administrations of both parties have relied on a combination of deception and media complicity to sell one war after another to the American people. Narrated by Sean Penn. [73 minutes]

February 16th – THE END OF POVERTY ? – Documentary that questions why poverty exists when there is so much wealth in the world. Historical examination of colonialism and its consequences; land grab, exploitation of natural resources, debt, free markets, demand for corporate profits, and the evolution of this economic system globally & here in the U.S. Stories from third world countries, & U.S. experts, testify how this can change for the better. If you’d heard about an international company trying to privatize all water in a Bolivian city, and the people’s organizing for their right to water, that’s one of the issues this film includes.
